Optical Black™

Optical Black™ absorbs 5X more light than conventional Black Anodizing

When exposed to white light, Optical Black™ absorbs 5 times more light than conventional black anodizing resulting is this image above, captured at a wavelength of 1064 nanometers.

Why is this important?

Optical Black™ was developed as a solution to the optical industries challenge to absorb stray light and minimize outgassing caused by other finishes. Some finishes and dyes actually break down in ultraviolet light and ‘outgas’ which deposit on the lens causing cloudiness and reduced accuracy. Optical Black™ utilizes an alternative color agent specifically designed for its absorption characteristics; does not outgas; and, meets Mil-A-8625.

Advantages of Optical Black™ Anodize:

Optical absorption characteristics are more uniform throughout the spectrum Unlike conventional anodize for laser applications, Pioneer's Optical Black™ will absorb beams with wavelengths outside the visible, including solid state, gas and dye lasers.
Chemically more stable for lasers and UV light sources

Will not discolor over time. Optical Black™ retains its absorptive characteristics throughout the infrared, visible and ultraviolet spectrum:

  • 0.8 micron – near infrared
  • 3-5 micron – mid infrared
  • 8-12 micron – long wave
Low reflectivity and outgas rates Optical Black™ won't cloud sensitive lenses with outgassed material
